The Difference Between
Alpha and Theta
and Why Both Matter

Neighbours. But not the same place.

02 — 06

Alpha — 8 to 12 cycles per second

The state of calm, relaxed awareness.

Conscious. Present. Aware — but the busy analytical chatter of normal waking life has quieted down. The gateway state. The bridge. The place where your mind begins to open to something deeper.

03 — 06

Theta — 4 to 8 cycles per second

Deeper. More inward. More removed from external awareness.

The conscious critical mind has stepped significantly further back. The deeper layers — your beliefs, memories, emotional imprints, ingrained patterns — are now genuinely accessible. This is where the real work happens.

04 — 06

One simple way
to understand the difference.

Alpha

Standing in the doorway. You can start to see things differently.

Theta

Being fully inside the room. You can actually change them.

05 — 06

How each state is used

Most forms of meditation work primarily in alpha. Deep hypnotherapy works in theta. Both are valuable. Both are natural. The more you understand where you are in the spectrum, the more deliberately you can use each state for what it does best.

06 — 06

Alpha is where you begin
to relax into openness.
Theta is where
you actually
change.
